The Gardens of Fanshawe College Blog
Travis M. May 15th 2015

This week has been cooler than last week with a couple mornings that were very cold. It was nice to have a bit of a break from the hot humid weather from last week. The crew and I continued with our clean-up of the campus for graduation by focusing on the entrance garden beds for a nice spring view as you drive into the college. While trimming down some grasses at the Fanshawe Blvd. entrance we found a duck living amongst them.

In the greenhouse we have been continuing to get our plants set up for our annual plant sale which goes on this weekend. We encourage everyone to come in and take a look at our plant selection. The plants in bloom are lighting up the greenhouse with color, the marigolds and geraniums especially.

With another week at Fanshawe coming to an end I cannot wait to see what next week and the rest of the summer has in store for myself and the crew.

The Gardens of Fanshawe College Blog

Over the week, this weather has been across the board. From rain to humidity you really don’t know what the next day will be like. The group of summer students and I started the season off by doing garden beds. We learned what tools we had to use which was all new to us, but very interesting to learn the common tools taken out to complete jobs.

Merlin house is where the focus for garden beds was directed yesterday. Pruning, weeding and cleaning out dead material around the Lily’s is what was done to make the garden bed fresh for spring.

In the greenhouse, we have been very efficiently transplanting Marigolds so they are ready for our customers. Another job that was completed was taking cuttings from the False African Violet, so they can develop roots and later on be transplanted into pots once they have become established.

Overall this week has been a really good learning experience and it’s only going to get better from here on.
